Lot 1001: W. Vennekamp, Harbour Scene at Sunset, Oil on Canvas
An oil on canvas painting by W. Vennekamp depicting a tranquil harbour scene at sunset. The composition features several moored fishing trawlers silhouetted against a hazy red and orange sky. The work is executed in a mid-20th-century stylised realism, characterised by broad, blended horizontal brushwork in the sky and a more textured application in the water, where sgraffito or scraping techniques have been used to create shimmering highlights. An indistinct signature is present in white script to the lower right corner; while the initial character may appear as an R, web consensus and visual matches identify the artist as W. Vennekamp. The painting is presented in a dark-stained moulded wood frame with a gilt inner slip. The verso shows the canvas stapled to a wooden stretcher, with no visible gallery labels or stamps.
