Lot 490: A Pair of Antique Oak and Iron-Bound Strong Boxes
A pair of antique wooden and iron-bound coffers, constructed in the style of 17th-century French or European strong boxes. Each casket is fashioned from thick timber planks, heavily reinforced with hand-forged iron hardware. The decorative metalwork includes scalloped corner plates, vertical reinforcing straps, and elaborate central hasp plates, all secured to the wood with dome-headed rivets. One box features a prominent arrow-head shaped hasp. The interior of one box indicates later period maintenance, with the hinges reinforced by steel flat-head screws. A modern adhesive label from Liskeard Auction Rooms (Lot 490) and a small handwritten paper slip with the number 9492 are attached to the exterior of one chest.
