Lot 557: An Assortment of West Country Advertising Stoneware Flagons
This lot features an assortment of five two-tone salt-glazed stoneware flagons, predominantly representing regional cider producers from the West Country. Each vessel is constructed with a typical buff-coloured body and a dark brown ferruginous glaze applied to the shoulders, neck, and looped handle. The collection includes a Symonds’ Scrumpy Jack flagon, printed in black with the brand name, a playing card Jack graphic, and text identifying it as The Old Fashioned Home Made Cider from the Cider and Perry Mills, Stoke Lacy, Herefordshire. A larger flagon for Perry Bros of Dowlish Wake, Ilminster, is marked for Somerset Cider. Also present is a Land’s End Scrumpy flagon featuring a pictorial transfer of the Land’s End cliffs and lighthouse, retaining its original black plastic ribbed screw cap. The group is completed by a flagon printed with Sherry in script and one plain, unmarked example.
