Lot 515: A Trio of Chinese Carved Hediao Walnut and Wood Scholar's Objects
This collection comprises three small hand-carved items of Chinese origin, typical of scholar’s desk accessories. The first piece is a carved walnut shell, known as hediao, featuring multiple figures in high relief, possibly monkeys or monks, entwined around the body with several small piercings. The second item is a miniature wooden puzzle ball, likely boxwood, with a reticulated outer layer carved with floral or petal-like motifs revealing at least one independently rotating concentric sphere within. The third item is a small wooden mallet with a turned handle and a spherical head, of the type used as a striker for miniature percussion instruments. No maker’s marks, reign marks, or inscriptions are visible on any of the objects.
