Lot 677: 19th Century Hardwood Writing Inkstand with Drawer
A 19th-century desk stand, also known as a standish or desk tidy, constructed from a dense, well-patinated hardwood, likely mahogany or fruitwood. The rectangular stand is designed with a centrally mounted, carved arched bridge handle. The top surface features two longitudinal pen troughs and two square recessed compartments intended to accommodate glass or ceramic inkwell inserts. The base contains a single, full-width shallow frieze drawer fitted with a small turned wooden pull knob, designed for the storage of nibs, wafers, or postage stamps. The entire unit is supported by four turned bun feet. No maker’s marks, stamps, or inscriptions were found upon inspection of the base and interior.
