Lot 744: A Cobalt Blue Glazed Ceramic Character Jar Depicting Sir Winston Churchill
A ceramic character jar or tobacco jar modeled as a standing figure of Sir Winston Churchill. The figure is depicted in a characteristic pose wearing a double-breasted suit and a hat which serves as the removable lid. The piece is finished in a deep monochrome cobalt blue glaze with a high-gloss surface. The interior and unglazed rims indicate a white earthenware or porcelain body. The modelling captures Churchill’s recognizable features, including his jowls and a cigar. This item is in the style of mid-20th-century British novelty ceramics produced by Staffordshire potteries such as Burgess and Leigh or Shorter and Son. A rectangular white paper inventory sticker is present on the reverse of the legs with the handwritten number 9249. There are no visible maker’s marks or backstamps.
