Lot 522: A Chinese Polychrome Crackle-Glaze Ginger Jar and Cover
A Japanese Imari porcelain plate dating from the late 19th century. The piece features a shallow, flared form with a classic scalloped and lobed rim. The decoration is executed in a traditional Imari palette comprising underglaze blue and overglaze iron red, further enhanced with gilded highlights. The central circular roundel depicts a floral arrangement in the ikebana style, contained within a blue-glazed vessel resting upon a stylized stand. This central medallion is framed by a broad, densely decorated border featuring large peony blossoms and intricate foliate scrolls set against a dark blue ground.
The reverse of the plate is finished with three simplified floral sprays in underglaze blue situated on the flange. The underside features a white glaze with two concentric underglaze blue rings located within the foot rim. No potter’s marks are visible on the base. The front of the plate bears a lot sticker for HCP Auctions South West and a handwritten vendor tag noting the item as an Imari plate.
