Lot 665: A Trio of Melo amphora (Baler Shell) Specimens
A large group of vintage interlocking brass marking stencils, designed for industrial or trade use to label crates and sacks. The plates are manufactured from brass and feature folded top and bottom rails to allow for the assembly of words and numeric sequences. Characters visible in the lot include a bold block-style font, with the letters H, C, and P clearly represented. Many individual stencils show evidence of historic use, with an aged patina and dried paint splatters in various colours including red and turquoise. The collection is housed in a rectangular tinplate box decorated with a four-panel lithographed floral design. The panels depict botanical subjects including chrysanthemums and dahlias. The items currently bear contemporary auction labels, one marked HCP Auctions South West Lot 666 and another numbered 13.
