Lot 15: Late 19th Century Art Nouveau Pewter Trinket Tray Depicting Ariadne
A late 19th-century pewter trinket tray of lobed rectangular form, featuring a highly ornate border in the Neo-Rococo and Art Nouveau styles. The border is decorated with scrolling acanthus leaves and rose blossoms at each corner. The central field contains a raised relief scene depicting the mythological figure Ariadne reclining in the foreground, with the head of a panther appearing behind her, referencing the classic Ariadne on the Panther motif. To the right of the scene, the name ARIADNE is inscribed vertically in block lettering. The tray stands on four small integral feet on the underside, which displays a hand-stippled or hammered texture. The design is in the style of European metalware manufacturers such as WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik), although no maker’s marks or hallmarks are visible.
Width: approximately 16 cm.
