Lot 111: An Anglo-Indian porcupine quill and bone-inlaid ebony box with a sliding top
An Anglo-Indian rectangular casket of Ceylonese (Sri Lankan) style, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The piece is constructed with a dark-stained wood frame, typically ebony, featuring panels of horizontally arranged porcupine quills. The wooden borders are embellished with circular bone or ivory dot inlays. The box incorporates a sliding lid mechanism that opens to reveal a secondary wood interior with a reddish hue. The underside is composed of a plain wooden panel. This form of decorative object was a prominent export item produced for the colonial market.
