Lot 244: Two Vintage Metal Travel Trunks including Elder Dempster Line Steamer Trunk
This lot comprises two vintage rectangular metal travel trunks of maritime interest. The primary trunk is constructed from sheet metal with a dark blue or black painted finish. The lid is stencilled in large white serif block letters with the name W. B. SMITH. It retains several original paper shipping labels, including a red Liverpool label, a circular Elder Dempster West Africa Service label featuring the central S logo, and a blue and white Elder Dempster Lines Hold label marked Not Wanted On Voyage. The trunk is fitted with a central iron latch mechanism stamped PATENT. The second item is a larger, plain black painted metal trunk, possibly a deed box, featuring a central brass-toned clasp and circular lock. These items are associated with the Elder Dempster Shipping Line, a major British commercial shipping company based in Liverpool that specialised in trade and passenger services to West Africa during the 19th and 20th centuries.
