Lot 503: Large Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Lidded Ginger Jar
A large Chinese blue and white porcelain lidded ginger jar of baluster form. The vessel features a high-shouldered body tapering to a flared foot, surmounted by a domed lid with a pointed, blue-painted finial. The exterior is decorated in underglaze blue with traditional motifs. The central body contains large decorative panels, including a depiction of a phoenix (fenghuang) with outspread wings set amongst stylised foliate and floral scrolls. The shoulder is embellished with a ruyi-head border containing diaper and floral patterns. The lid is decorated with a dragon amongst stylised clouds, and the foot is finished with a continuous band of spiral scrollwork. A white rectangular auction label is adhered to the shoulder, which reads: HCP Auctions South West / Lot 503 / www.hcpauctions.net. No maker’s marks, reign marks, or base stamps are visible. Height: 41.5 cm (approximately 16.25 inches).
