Lot 1015: A Pair of Hand-Coloured Hunting Prints after Henry Alken
A pair of 19th-century hand-coloured intaglio prints after Henry Alken, depicting traditional British field sports. The first print is titled Hare Hunting, Plate 1 and shows a pack of hounds and huntsmen in red coats ascending a grassy hill toward a farmhouse, with a panoramic valley visible below. The second print depicts a fox hunting scene, with the hunt moving through a wooded landscape. Both prints are executed in a combination of engraving and aquatint with hand-colouring. They are presented in matching burr-wood frames with gilded inner slips and glazed fronts. Image 1 is inscribed Hare Hunting, Plate 1 and London in the bottom margin. Small text identifies the artist and engraver in the lower margins, though these are not fully legible. One frame bears a white auction label numbered 1015, and a smaller label A967 is adhered to the glass of one print.
