Lot 598: Two pieces of Mary Gregory emerald green glass comprising a jug and tumbler
This set of Mary Gregory glassware consists of an emerald green transparent glass water jug and a matching tumbler. The items are hand-blown, with the jug featuring an applied handle and a ground and polished pontil mark on the base. Both pieces are decorated with hand-painted white enamel scenes in the characteristic Mary Gregory style, depicting children in late 19th-century attire. The jug depicts a young girl in a ruffled dress standing within a landscape featuring palm-like foliage, while the tumbler shows a young boy in a matching woodland setting. The figures are rendered in profile with fine detail and a textured white enamel base representing the ground. Small air bubbles, known as seeds, are present within the glass body, consistent with the period of manufacture.
