Lot 622: A Collection of 1981 Royal Wedding Commemorative Newspapers, Supplements, and a Reproduction John Speed Cornwall Map
This lot comprises a collection of British newspapers and commemorative supplements primarily documenting the 1981 Royal Wedding of HRH The Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer, alongside a reproduction antique map. The collection includes a special edition of The Sun newspaper dated Tuesday, July 28, 1981, titled The Royal Sun, featuring the headline Darling Di, You’re lovely but promise us… and a front-page photograph of the couple. Included is a multi-page supplement titled Born to be a Princess, featuring a photographic montage titled Precious snapshots from the family album… the seven ages of Lady Diana, which displays a series of photographs from her childhood and adolescence. Several other newsprint clippings and colour illustrated supplements are present, including one featuring a cartoon depiction of the wedding party. The accompanying map is a reproduction of a 17th-century map of Cornwall by John Speed. It includes a decorative cartouche with the Royal coat of arms and the motto DIEU ET MON DROIT. The imprint at the bottom right states these Mappes are to be solde in Popes-head alley against the Exchange by John Sudbury and G. Humble. Cum Privilegio. The map is printed on heavy parchment-style paper with artificially aged and deckled edges.
