Lot 691: A Hand-Carved Dark Wood Folk Art Figure of a Man
This carved wooden sculpture depicts a male figure, likely a peasant or folkloric character, rendered in a bold, faceted folk-art style. The figure is hand-carved from a single block of dark-toned wood, featuring angular, geometric facial features, a wide-brimmed hat, and simplified clothing. The figure stands upon an integral, multi-sided base. The heavy tool marks and rough-hewn finish are characteristic of mid-20th-century woodcarving traditions. The underside of the base shows the raw texture of the wood with coarse horizontal tool scarring and some white surface residue. Two adhesive paper labels are present: one on the shoulder marked 1080 and an auction house label on the base for HCP Auctions South West, Lot 691. No artist signatures or manufacturer marks are visible.
