Lot 986: An Antique Stained Bentwood Hat and Coat Stand
An antique stained bentwood hat and coat stand featuring a classic scrolling design associated with late 19th and early 20th-century production. The piece is constructed from steam-bent timber, finished with a dark mahogany-toned stain, and topped with a turned finial. The upper section comprises six large outward-curving scrolling hooks and six smaller inward-curving hooks arranged around a central turned column. The base is supported by four out-swept legs braced by a circular hoop stretcher designed to function as an integrated umbrella stand. The joints are secured with visible metal screw fixings. A modern white adhesive label is present on the central pole which reads HCP AUCTIONS above Lot 96. No other manufacturer marks or stamps are visible.

The stand exhibits significant wear to the finish throughout, with noticeable scuffing, scratches, and loss of stain particularly concentrated on the legs and base hoop (photo 1). The upper hooks show general rubbing and surface marks consistent with age and use (photo 2). The structural integrity appears sound with all components present and secure.
