Lot 1091: Two Vintage Oil on Board Paintings by J.J. Simmonds and Another
Two vintage oil on board paintings by J.J. Simmonds and another, one depicting a rural church landscape and the other a modernist harbour scene. The first painting, dated September 1988, is a traditional realist study of an English village church featuring flint masonry and a red-tiled roof, set behind a low stone wall and mature trees. The work is signed and dated in the lower right corner in black pigment, reading J.J. Simmonds Sept. 1988. The second painting is a mid-century expressionist harbour scene at sunset, depicting silhouettes of ship masts and a distant cityscape with a prominent spire. This piece utilizes heavy impasto and palette knife applications in a palette of burnt orange, brown, and grey tones. A dark, illegible signature is present in the upper right corner. Both works are housed in decorative wooden frames with gilded inner slips. A white adhesive label on the harbour scene frame reads HCP Auctions South West Lot 1091.
Condition report:
The church landscape painting is in stable condition with light surface dust across the board and an illegible white sticker on the upper left corner of the frame (photo 1). The harbour scene displays a small circular blemish or loss in the upper left sky area and general surface grime (photo 2). Both wooden frames exhibit minor handling wear and surface scuffs but remain structurally sound.
