Lot 672: A Mid-Century Japanese Lustreware Porcelain Coffee Set
A mid-century Japanese lustreware porcelain coffee set, comprising a tall coffee pot with a fitted lid, a lidded twin-handled sugar bowl, a milk jug, and a collection of matching demitasse cups and saucers. Each piece is decorated with a hand-painted traditional Japanese landscape scene featuring pagodas and snow-covered trees against a mountainous backdrop. The decoration is applied over a distinctive iridescent lustre glaze in shades of peach and pale blue, which gives the surface a metallic, reflective quality. The spouts and handles are finished in a coordinating pale blue glaze. The base of the pieces features a printed black ink mark reading MADE IN JAPAN in capital letters. Additionally, the coffee pot carries a white adhesive retail label handwritten with Japanese Coffee Set NEVER USED 2818. The set represents a popular style of mid-20th-century Japanese export ware produced during the Showa era.
Condition report:
The set is in excellent overall condition, appearing to have never been used as indicated by the retail label. There are no visible chips, cracks, or restorations to any of the porcelain components (photos 1 and 2). The iridescent lustre glaze remains bright and intact with no significant surface wear or rubbing (photo 2). There is minor surface soiling to the unglazed foot rims (photo 3).
