Lot 1131: An Antique Gilded Cast Metal Oval Vanity Tray / Mirror
An antique gilded cast metal oval vanity tray / mirror, featuring an ornate frame in the Rococo fashion. The frame is heavily cast with scrolling foliage, acanthus leaf motifs, and elaborate openwork, flanked by twin horizontal handles decorated with floral clusters. A continuous gadrooned or rope-twist pattern defines the inner border surrounding the central oval mirror plate. An adhesive rectangular paper label is present on the mirror surface, reading HCP Auctions South West, Lot 1131, www.hcpauctions.net. There are no other visible maker’s marks, hallmarks, or signatures. The substantial weight of the piece suggests a base metal such as brass or spelter, finished with a gilded surface that has developed a darkened patina over time.
Condition report:
The mirror plate exhibits significant signs of age and degradation, including widespread foxing, heavy clouding, and prominent spots of desilvering, notably a large irregular dark patch in the lower-left quadrant (photo 1). The gilded finish on the cast metal frame shows wear, rubbing, and tarnishing, with the darker base metal visible on the high points of the relief (photo 2 and 3). There is a visible accumulation of dust and debris within the crevices of the ornate casting. The item is in worn antique condition consistent with age and use.
