Lot 688: A Pair of Vintage Framed Artworks including a Satirical Illustration by Henry (Signed)
A pair of vintage framed artworks, comprising a monochrome satirical illustration by the artist Henry and a decorative study of a tuxedo cat. The satirical print, dating from the mid-20th century, depicts a golfer wearing a learner’s ‘L’ plate, captioned ‘MR. PUNCH AGREES WITH ALL MR. HORE-BELISHA SAYS ABOUT DANGEROUS DRIVING—AND MORE.’ and bears a printed signature ‘HENRY’ to the lower right. It is mounted within a cream mat and housed in a dark wood frame featuring a gilt-effect inner slip. The second work is a colour illustration of a black and white tuxedo cat reclining on a red runner decorated with white floral motifs, presented in a light-toned wood frame with a wide white mat. Both frames are fitted with glass and bear white adhesive labels to the lower left corners with the inventory number ‘1080’ handwritten in red ink. A separate small white label reading ‘Lot 612’ is visible on the ground near the frames.
Condition report:
The satirical print by Henry exhibits significant foxing and brown spotting across the paper support and the surrounding cream mount (photo 2). The cat illustration and its mount appear in good overall condition with no visible foxing or damp staining (photo 1). Both wooden frames show minor surface abrasions and dust accumulation consistent with age and storage.
