Lot 696: A Vintage Rustic Grapevine Wood Handle Corkscrew
A vintage rustic grapevine wood handle corkscrew, of hand-carved construction utilising a natural gnarled vine. The handle retains its organic, twisted form with numerous natural knots, hollows, and deep fissures, finished in a polished dark brown stain that highlights the wood grain. A steel worm is set into the centre of the handle, secured with a small brass-toned washer at the junction. The worm is of standard helical design. A white adhesive paper label is taped to the upper portion of the handle, bearing the handwritten characters ‘1080’ in red ink. A small piece of twine is tied around the base of the metal worm. No manufacturer’s marks, signatures, or country-of-origin stamps are visible on the metal or wooden components.
Condition report:
The wooden handle shows minor surface wear and dark deposits in the recessed crevices consistent with age and use (photo 1). The steel worm exhibits significant surface oxidation, pitting, and discoloration, particularly towards the base and tip (photo 2). The adhesive label shows slight yellowing and lifting at the edges (photo 1). No structural cracks or losses are visible to the timber.
