Lot 705: A Vintage HIS London Framed Family Name Origin Print for the Surname Crosby
A vintage HIS London framed family name origin print for the surname Crosby, produced in the late 20th century. The document provides a detailed narrative history of the surname’s origins, tracing it from the Irish family of MacCrossan in County Kerry to the English townships of Crosby in Cumberland, Lincoln, and Yorkshire. The text includes descriptions of the coat of arms and crest, along with the Latin motto INVIDIA FLOREBIT JUSTUS, translated on the page as The just man will flourish in spite of envy. The document is designed with a decorative border of scrolling oak leaves and acorns interspersed with various heraldic shields, and features a red applied faux-wax seal at the upper right. A printed copyright mark at the bottom centre reads Copyright HIS London 1997. The print is mounted within a blue card mat and housed in a glazed frame with a burr-effect wood finish and a narrow gilt inner slip. A white rectangular adhesive label with the handwritten red number 1080 is attached to the front of the glazing.
Condition report:
The paper surface exhibits widespread and significant foxing throughout the entire document (photo 1). An auction or price sticker is adhered to the exterior of the glass at the lower right (photo 1). The frame shows minor surface wear consistent with age but remains structurally sound.
