Lot 744: A Pair of Vintage Gerz German Lidded Beer Steins
A pair of vintage Gerz German lidded beer steins, featuring high-relief decoration and ornate metal lids. The first stein is a souvenir of Heidelberg, featuring a central panel depicting Schloss Heidelberg framed by a multi-coloured floral garland. The main body is decorated with high-relief grapevines and purple grape clusters against a stippled cobalt blue and cream stoneware ground. The word Heidelberg is visible at the base of the central motif. The second stein depicts a traditional Alpine scene with a male figure in a yellow waistcoat and red sleeves holding a beer mug, flanked by large white Edelweiss flowers. The side bears the vertical text EIN VOLLES GLAS. Both steins are fitted with conical pewter lids with decorative thumb lifts. A white paper label attached to the handle of one stein reads 2 Beer Steins incl. 1x Gerz and a circled lot number 1893. No other maker’s marks or stamps are legible.
Condition report:
Both items show light surface dust and grime consistent with display (photo 1). A small red surface scuff is present on the shoulder of the Alpine scene stein (photo 3). The metal lids and hinges show signs of oxidation and dulling of the finish common with aged pewter (photo 1). The hinges appear to be intact and functional. No chips or cracks to the ceramic bodies are visible in the provided photographs.
