Lot 822: A Vintage Hand-Carved and Painted Wooden Father Christmas Floor-Standing Figure
A vintage hand-carved and painted wooden Father Christmas floor-standing figure in a folk-art style. The piece is carved from a solid log section, retaining the original rounded form of the timber within the integrated circular base. The figure features a full-length hooded cloak in red with a painted white trim and a deeply textured beard finished in a distressed white tone. He holds a separate, natural-finish wooden staff in his right hand and a lantern painted in black and gold in his left. Visible tool marks from gouges and chisels provide texture across the surface. Affixed to the right shoulder is a small white rectangular adhesive label with a red border bearing the handwritten numbers ‘16717’ over ‘280’, and a larger white rectangular label printed with the text ‘Lot 822’. No maker’s signatures, stamps, or marks are legible on the figure.

Condition report:
A significant vertical drying crack (checking) is visible running from the centre of the beard down the front of the robe and into the base (photo 2). Another deep radial split is present in the base log (photo 3). There are general scuffs and small chips to the painted finish throughout, consistent with the rustic construction and handling (photo 1).
