Lot 515: An Assortment of English Ironstone and Earthenware Ceramics including Johnson Brothers and Baker and Bevans
An assortment of English ironstone and earthenware table and decorative wares featuring various nineteenth and twentieth-century patterns. The collection includes a trio of Johnson Brothers ironstone pieces, comprising one plate and two rimmed soup bowls, decorated in the Snowhite pattern. This design features transfer-printed teal-blue wheat stalks and small blue five-petal flowers on a white ground with a dark rim line. The bases are stamped in black with Snowhite in script above a crown flanked by P and 1, followed by JOHNSON BROS, MADE IN ENGLAND, and IRONSTONE.
Included is a single small circular saucer by Baker and Bevans in the Leyton pattern, featuring two moulded and pierced handles and an Imari-style palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron red, and gilt highlights. The base bears the impressed marks LEYTON above B & B, and a lower oval stamp containing B & B over IRONSTONE, alongside a hand-painted decorator mark in red reading 8667 over ///.
The group further contains a large footed earthenware bowl, possibly for fruit or punch, decorated with polychrome transfer-printed floral sprays of roses, tulips, and pansies. The interior rim is finished with a repeating geometric and floral gilt-toned border. Several miscellaneous nested saucers are also included, featuring a cobalt blue example with a white centre and gilt scrollwork, and another piece with a dark burgundy and blue patterned rim.
