Lot 582: A hand-carved banded onyx and marble chess set with matching board
A complete chess set comprising a square board and thirty-two individual pieces, hand-carved from natural banded stone. The board is constructed from alternating squares of polished cream-white and reddish-brown stone, set within a solid white stone border. The pieces are carved in a stylized, minimalist fashion characterized by stacked, rounded tiers. One side is rendered in a pale cream-coloured stone, while the opposing side is crafted from a terracotta-coloured stone with prominent natural banding. The pieces exhibit a polished finish, highlighting the natural geological variations within the material. No maker’s marks, signatures, or country-of-origin stamps are visible on the board or the individual pieces.
