Lot 616: A Brass Cutty Sark Ship Door Knocker and a Bronze Monkey Hook

This auction ended on 17 October 2026.

Start price: £7

Estimated price: £7 - £10

Buyer's Premium: 20%

Sold for: £11

A cast brass maritime door knocker and a patinated metal figural hook. The door knocker features a high-relief depiction of the celebrated tea clipper Cutty Sark under full sail, set above a scroll bearing the name ‘CUTTY SARK’. Below the ship is a rectangular tablet embossed with a six-line verse from the poem ‘The Set of the Sail’ by Ella Wheeler Wilcox, reading: ‘One ship drives East and another drives West with the self-same winds that blow. ‘Tis the set of the sails and not the gales which tell us the way to go’. The reverse of the plaque is fitted with a hinged striking mechanism. The lot also includes a smaller figural hook cast in the form of a seated monkey or primate, with a dark bronze-toned patina and a small mounting aperture near the base. The door knocker bears no visible maker’s marks, though the reverse shows a dark, primary cast finish.
