Lot 488: A Collection of Alfred Meakin Earthenware Dinner and Tea Wares
A collection of Alfred Meakin earthenware tablewares featuring a mid-century modern minimalist pattern. The decoration consists of transfer-printed intersecting thin black and red lines set against a cream-coloured ground. The service comprises two oval covered vegetable tureens with pedestal bases, a sauce boat, a set of dinner plates, and multiple tea cups with matching saucers. A green printed backstamp is present on the underside of the pieces featuring a crown symbol above the text ALFRED MEAKIN ENGLAND. This set was manufactured in Tunstall, Staffordshire, and represents typical British commercial pottery design from the mid-20th century.
Condition report:
The service is in used condition with visible surface grime and dust throughout, particularly on the stacked plates. A small chip is noted on the rim of the plate acting as a stand for the sauce boat. No other major cracks or repairs are visible. Several pieces have adhesive auction lot labels attached.
