Start price: £3

Estimated price: £5 - £250

Buyer's Premium:

A set of three porcelain dessert plates dating to the Meiji (1868-1912) or Taisho (1912-1926) period. The plates are decorated with hand-painted birds in flight amongst grasses and flowering branches, with a border of light blue blossoms and iron-red highlights. Also included is a Japanese scroll holder from the late Edo period (late 18th to early 19th century). The holder consists of a central bone sleeve with scrimshaw engravings depicting insects and a frog, held by a carved boxwood figure of a toad with a textured surface and inlaid eyes. No maker marks are visible on any of the items.

Condition report:

The plates show minor surface wear and rubbing to the gilded rims; auction stickers are adhered to the decorated surfaces. The bone sleeve of the scroll holder has vertical hairline cracks and internal damage. The boxwood carving shows an aged patina.
