Lot 547: A mid-20th century Craven A cigarettes circular enamel advertising sign
A circular vitreous enamel advertising sign for Craven A cigarettes, a brand historically produced by the Carreras Tobacco Company. The sign features a central vertical white rectangular panel with a black border, containing the brand name in red block lettering. The circular background is decorated with concentric bands of red, orange, and yellow. To the left of the central panel is the word SMOKE in black sans-serif type, and to the right is the period slogan WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR THROAT, also in black. The reverse of the sign is finished in a plain dark enamel and is without visible maker’s marks. This type of signage was a common feature of British retail environments from the 1930s through the 1950s.

Condition report:
The sign is in used, original condition. There are several significant areas of enamel loss and chipping with associated surface oxidation and rust, most notably around the mounting holes and along the outer edges. There are scattered surface scratches, minor pitting, and general wear consistent with long-term display. The colours remain vibrant with minimal evidence of significant UV fading. A modern auction lot tag is currently attached to the base.
