Lot 595: A Collection of The Boy's Own Paper Magazines and Associated Ephemera 1936
A collection of vintage British periodicals published for the Religious Tract Society, London. The lot comprises ten monthly issues of The Boy’s Own Paper from the 1936 calendar year, specifically the months of February, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December. These magazines are staple-bound with illustrated paper covers. Each monthly issue features full-colour cover art depicting various sporting and adventure themes, including ice hockey, cricket, canoeing, tennis, swimming, and a pirate scene. All monthly covers include advertisements for Cadburys Milk Blocks and are priced at 6d. The collection also includes a Boy’s Own Paper Special Souvenir Edition priced at 2/- featuring an ornate monochrome illustrated cover. Additionally, the lot contains a programme for the Bertram Mills Circus at Olympia, dated 22nd December to 23rd January (circa 1936-37), which features a back cover advertisement for Bassett-Lowke Ltd. model railways of Northampton.
Condition report:
The collection is in good vintage condition consistent with age. The covers retain vibrant colours, though most issues show typical edge wear, light creasing to the corners, and minor age-toning or light soiling. The December issue exhibits more pronounced wear to the bottom right corner of the front cover. The original staple bindings are intact, with likely light rust present to the metal staples. The interiors appear complete and free from significant foxing or heavy staining based on an external inspection. The circus programme and souvenir edition show age-toning and light handling creases.
