Lot 469: British Military C30A Pattern 1940 MK 2 Wooden Ammunition Transit Chest
A British military C30A Pattern 1940 MK 2 wooden ammunition transit chest, constructed from heavy timber with non-sparking brass reinforcements to the corners and edges. The chest is secured with flat-head screws and features traditional rope beckets passed through wooden blocks at each end for transport. The exterior is finished in a dark olive drab paint with various service markings stencilled in yellow and white. Side panels bear the National Stock Number 375-99-220-2413, associated with demolition charges, alongside a weight of 28 LBS and a date of 11/71. The lid features later stencilling including FIDO-3117, 1105151-103, and a date of 11/84, with the word CHARGES partially visible. The end panel is stencilled with the pattern designation 1940 MK2 and C30A. This box represents a long-service item, originally a Second World War design utilised through the Cold War period for the transport of sensitive explosive components or technical equipment.
Condition report:
The chest is in used vintage condition consistent with active military service. There is significant paint loss, scuffing, and surface scratching across the wooden body. The non-ferrous metal hardware shows a dark aged patina with some surface oxidation. The rope handles are heavily weathered and frayed but remain intact and structurally sound.
