Lot 475: Two stoneware jugs including a salt-glazed and a Rockingham-style example
This lot consists of two ceramic jugs of different styles and materials. The first is a salt-glazed stoneware jug of bulbous form with a flared neck and a simple loop handle. It is finished in a traditional grey salt glaze with cobalt blue slip decoration, including horizontal bands, a stylized foliate pattern around the shoulder, and a large handwritten numeral 2 on the body. The second is a large, wide-bodied jug with a short cylindrical neck and a sturdy loop handle. It is coated in a glossy, dark brown Rockingham-style lead glaze with a contrasting light buff-coloured glaze to the interior. No maker’s marks, stamps, or incised characters are visible on the exterior of either item.
Condition report:
The salt-glazed jug shows ingrained dirt and minor staining consistent with age and use. The brown-glazed jug features minor vertical glaze runs near the neck from the firing process and has a modern auction label attached to the body. No major chips or cracks are visible on either piece.
