Lot 480: A Columbia Grafonola Portable Acoustic Gramophone and a Collection of 78rpm Records
This lot features a Columbia Grafonola portable wind-up acoustic gramophone housed in a black Rexine-covered wooden case. The interior of the lid displays a gold-coloured transfer decal for The New Columbia Grafonola with the company musical note logo. The internal deck is finished in a dark wood veneer and contains a gold-toned S-shaped tonearm and a matching circular soundbox with a perforated face. A mechanical start/stop and speed adjustment lever is positioned on the front right of the deck. Accompanying the gramophone is an assortment of 78rpm shellac records. Many of these are contained within brown paper indexed sleeves from a Winel Record Case. One record present on the turntable is a Parlophone pressing, catalogue number R. 3799, of The Happy Wanderer by The Obernkirchen Children’s Choir.
Condition report:
The exterior Rexine covering shows age-related wear and scuffing, particularly at the corners and edges. The metal carrying handle and front latch exhibit oxidation and surface rust. The interior wooden deck and the lid decal remain in a well-preserved state. The mechanical working order and the condition of the mainspring have not been tested, and the winding handle is not clearly visible. The records show varying degrees of surface wear, scratches, and dust accumulation consistent with age. Several paper sleeves show tearing and handling wear.
