Lot 724: A Mid-20th Century Bauhaus Style Child's Bentwood and Moulded Plywood Rocking Chair
A mid-century modern child’s rocking armchair, circa 1950s, designed in the Bauhaus style. The chair is constructed with a single-piece moulded plywood seat and backrest mounted to a bentwood frame, likely composed of beech or birch. The backrest is decorated with an incised nursery illustration depicting a bear in a hat and coat and a rabbit figure standing beside a picket fence. The construction features curved bentwood arms and a frame secured with exposed metal bolt and screw joinery. This form is frequently attributed to German manufacture from the mid-20th century. A modern paper label is adhered to the front rail and an auction tag is attached to the right arm.
Condition report:
The chair is in well-used condition, showing significant wear to the finish throughout. There are visible scuffs and minor losses to the wood along the tops of the arms. The seat and backrest exhibit surface scratching and wear to the decorative illustration. A modern paper label and adhesive tape residue are present on the front seat rail. The structure remains sound with all joinery intact.
