Lot 739: A Set of Eight Mid-20th Century Slatted Wooden Folding Chairs
A set of eight vintage folding chairs, constructed from a light-coloured hardwood such as beech or oak. These chairs feature a utilitarian design typical of mid-20th-century British institutional furniture. Each chair is designed with a simple folding frame and metal pivot pins. The seats are composed of vertical wooden slats, secured to the frame with visible screws or bolts. The backrests consist of a single, plain rectangular top rail. The design is consistent with chairs used in community halls, churches, or schools during the mid-century period. A small white paper tag is present on one chair, though the text is no longer legible.
Condition report:
The chairs are in heavily used vintage condition. There is significant wear to the original finish throughout, including surface staining, water marks, scuffs, and scratches. The timber displays a distressed patina consistent with long-term institutional use. Some chairs show evidence of historical woodworm, though there is no evidence of current activity. Mechanical joints may require tightening.
