Lot 756: A Collection of Novelty and Decorative Ceramic Teapots and Wares including Sadler and Royal Worcester
This collection comprises an assortment of novelty and decorative ceramic teapots and related wares, including pieces attributed to Sadler and Royal Worcester. The group features a Sadler A Round of Golf teapot of rectangular form, the lid decorated with a blue and green harlequin pattern and a clock-tower finial with gilded highlights, the body showing a polychrome transfer-printed scene of historical golfers. Also included is an earthenware teapot relief-moulded as a baking table or dresser in a monochrome buff glaze with moulded kitchen accoutrements to the lid including a rolling pin and flour sack. Further items include a sponge-printed floral armchair teapot with a black cat finial, and a farm animal group teapot modelled as a stack featuring a pig, cow, and a cat on a yellow cushion. The architectural selection includes a Tudor-style half-timbered cottage, a shop-front teapot titled Antiques, a medieval-style square tower with crenellated battlements, and two smaller cottages with moulded brickwork. Completing the collection are two pieces finished in a polished metallic gold-effect glaze, comprising a teapot and a taller hot water jug, both bearing circular inscriptions to the body, and a white glazed character teapot with transfer-printed facial features and a red spherical finial. The items are constructed from glazed earthenware and porcelain using a combination of relief-moulding, polychrome hand-painting, and transfer-printing.
Condition report:
The collection is generally in good condition. A small chip is noted on the rim of the spout of the baking table teapot. There is minor wear to the gilding on the Sadler A Round of Golf teapot and the gold-glazed wares.
