Lot 760: A 20th-century carved hardwood prayer chair
A 20th-century prayer chair, or prie-dieu, constructed from hardwood with a dark mahogany-style stain and visible straight grain. The chair features a tall, tapering back panel with a circular aperture containing a deeply carved floral motif. The seat is of hexagonal form, supported by a matching tapering front panel and a smaller rear leg, creating a geometric profile influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. The construction utilizes flat panel joinery with visible covers on the reverse. A white paper tag is attached to the backrest with handwritten text reading 222, HARDWOOD, CARVED, PRAYER CHAIR., £12 RES. A small rectangular sticker with the digits 092 is present on the top edge of the backrest. No manufacturer marks or signatures are present on the wood.
Condition report:
The chair is in good overall condition with light surface wear consistent with age and use. There are minor scuffs and scratches to the seat and base. The finish shows some minor unevenness in tone.
