Lot 791: A Continental Style Stripped Pine Two-Piece Armoire with Relief Carvings
This large armoire is constructed in two sections and finished in a light, natural stripped pine. The upper section features twin paneled doors, each decorated with deep relief carvings of stylized fruit, resembling pineapples or artichokes, surrounded by foliate scrolls and acanthus motifs. The doors are fitted with dark-toned metal ring pulls. The separate base unit features two wide drawers, each bearing matching carved ornamentation and a pair of metal ring pulls. The piece is designed in a continental provincial style, exhibiting characteristics of French hunt-style furniture. No maker’s marks, signatures, or stamps are visible on the surfaces. The interior was not inspected.
Condition report:
The armoire is presented in a stripped state with a natural wood finish. Visible wear, surface marks, and minor abrasions are present, consistent with age and the stripping process. There is some evidence of timber shrinkage and separation in the base unit panels. The hardware shows a dark patina and oxidation consistent with age.
