Lot 835: A 20th-century stained pine Smoker's Bow armchair
This armchair is a 20th-century example of the Smoker’s Bow or Captain’s chair style, constructed from stained pine. The design features a broad, horseshoe-shaped crest rail supported by seven turned spindles. The solid, shaped saddle seat is mounted on four turned legs, which are reinforced by a traditional H-frame stretcher. The construction utilizes spindle-and-socket joinery. No manufacturer marks, stamps, or inscriptions are visible on the frame. Two paper labels are adhered to the crest rail: one printed inventory label bearing the number 835 and a second handwritten label reading Item 162 £10.
Condition report:
The chair is in used condition with significant and uneven wear to the stained finish, most notably on the crest rail, spindles, and the front edge of the seat. The seat surface shows various scuffs, small indentations, and general signs of age-related use.
