Lot 836: An Italian Sorrento style marquetry inlaid music box occasional table
An Italian occasional table in the Sorrento style, likely mid-20th century. The rectangular top features canted corners and is decorated with an intricate marquetry panel depicting scrolling foliate motifs and birds, executed in fruitwood and boxwood inlays. The central panel is enclosed within a geometric patterned border. The table is supported by four slender, tapered cabriole legs. This form is characteristic of Italian musical sewing or jewellery tables produced for the souvenir market. No maker’s marks are present on the piece, although it bears a paper lot tag from Liskeard Auction Rooms.
Condition report:
The protective lacquer finish on the table top exhibits significant crazing and cracking throughout. There are visible losses to the marquetry inlay, particularly around the perimeter and corners. The legs show minor scuffs and surface wear consistent with age and use.
