Lot 950: An Arts and Crafts Oak Fall-Front Bureau
An early 20th-century oak bureau of compact proportions. The piece is constructed from solid oak with a prominent natural grain throughout. The slanted fall-front and the single full-width drawer are both decorated with a notched dog-tooth carved border. The fall-front opens to reveal a fitted interior containing seven pigeonhole compartments for stationery. The writing surface is finished in plain oak without a leather or baize insert. The lower drawer is fitted with two decorative brass drop handles on rectangular backplates. The structure is supported by curved side supports joined by stretchers. No maker’s marks are visible.
Condition report:
The bureau is in fair antique condition. The interior writing surface shows significant dark staining consistent with historic ink spills. The exterior oak exhibits surface scuffs, light scratches, and general wear commensurate with age and use. The timber appears dry and would benefit from a light cleaning and waxing. No key is present for the lock.
