Lot 786: A Victorian Dome-top Travelling Trunk by James Bryant of Plymouth
A late 19th-century Victorian dome-top travelling trunk, also known as a Saratoga or camelback trunk. The piece features a wood-framed body with a distinctive curved lid, reinforced by horizontal wooden slats and iron banding. The exterior is finished in a dark, textured material, likely a japanned heavy canvas. The front is fitted with iron hardware including a central lock plate and two draw-bolt latches. The interior is lined with paper and features a decorative Greek key border around the lid. A manufacturer’s label is pasted to the interior lid, identifying the maker as Jas. Bryant, 8 East Street, Plymouth, and listing a variety of products such as overland trunks, cabin trunks, and ladies’ dress baskets.
