Lot 466: A Pair of Japanese Imari Porcelain Lobed Dishes
A pair of Japanese Imari porcelain dishes, each featuring a scalloped or lobed rim. The dishes are decorated in the traditional Imari palette consisting of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red enamel, and highlights of green and gilding. The central circular medallion is decorated with a Three Friends of Winter (Shochiku-bai) motif, comprising pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms. The well and rim are divided into six radiating panels containing alternating cloud-shaped reserves. These reserves feature fruiting peaches, symbolising longevity, and stylised floral sprays, set against alternating deep blue and iron-red grounds. These items are characteristic of high-quality export wares produced during the Meiji period (1868-1912). One dish bears a modern auction sticker for Liskeard Auction Rooms, Lot 466, and is accompanied by a handwritten vendor tag inscribed Vendor – 1924 / 1924. No maker’s marks are visible on the upper surfaces of the dishes.
