Lot 581: A 12-piece Set of Carlton Ware and Other English Green-glazed Leaf-molded Ceramic Tableware
A 12-piece collection of English green-glazed ceramic tableware, primarily in the majolica style with relief-molded leaf and basket-weave designs. The set includes multiple leaf-shaped plates and serving dishes of various sizes, some featuring applied red berry motifs at the stems. One specific leaf-shaped dish features a contrasting ochre-coloured glaze on the underside. The collection further comprises a small cream pitcher on a matching leaf saucer, a small cup on a leaf saucer, a lobed bowl with a relief-molded basket-weave pattern, and a deep elongated leaf-shaped dish. A rectangular serving tray is also included, featuring a central relief-molded scene of sheep in a rural landscape within a basket-weave border.
The pieces are constructed from earthenware with translucent green glazes characteristic of mid-20th-century British pottery. One large serving piece bears a printed backstamp in black: Carlton Ware MADE IN ENGLAND –TRADE MARK– alongside an incised number 2203. The rectangular tray is incised with ENGLAND twice and the shape number 575. A handwritten lot label included with the items reads VENNAL 1924 BOX: GREEN CHINA.
