Buyer's Premium:

An early 19th-century earthenware plate manufactured by the Staffordshire pottery firm of Job and William Ridgway, active circa 1814 to 1830. The piece is crafted in what the manufacturer termed Indian Stone Ware and features a circular form with a distinctive scalloped and lobed rim. The decoration consists of an Oriental-style floral pattern, with a large hand-enamelled pink peony at the centre surrounded by smaller orange and blue flowers with green foliage. Similar floral sprigs are spaced around the inner rim. The decoration is executed in polychrome overglaze enamels over transfer-printed outlines. The outer edge is finished with a transfer-printed scrolling border in an ochre and brown tone. The reverse bears a transfer-printed scroll mark in green, yellow, and brown, containing the words INDIAN STONE WARE and the initials J & W. which identify the manufacturer. A small number 10 is visible within the central oval of the mark.
