Lot 444: A Pair of German Salt-glazed Stoneware Lidded Jars comprising a Punch Bowl and a Rumtopf Jar
A pair of contemporary salt-glazed stoneware lidded jars in the German Westerwald style. The set consists of a larger punch bowl and a smaller Rumtopf jar. Both vessels feature globular bodies with twin lug handles and are fitted with domed lids topped with cobalt blue globular finials. The lid of the punch bowl includes a notch for a ladle. The decoration is relief-moulded and hand-painted in cobalt blue and manganese brown on a light grey ground. The bodies are ornamented with scrolling vine-work and clusters of fruit, including grapes and pears. Each jar features an embossed inscription in manganese brown around the shoulder; the larger jar is inscribed PUNCH BOWL and the smaller jar is inscribed RUMTOPF. No maker’s marks are visible on the exterior of the pieces. These vessels are traditional German ceramic forms used for serving beverages and making fruit preserves in alcohol.
