Buyer's Premium:

This lot features two Japanese hand-carved wood netsuke, likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. The first netsuke is carved from boxwood (tsuge) and represents the head of a bearded male figure, characteristically depicting one of the Seven Lucky Gods, such as Fukurokuju or Jurojin, identified by a high cranium and long, flowing beard. The boxwood has acquired a warm yellow-ochre patina and shows natural wood grain. The underside features an incised signature composed of two Japanese characters, though these are not legible enough for a definitive attribution to a specific maker. The second netsuke is carved from a dark-stained wood and depicts a reclining figure, possibly an immortal or a monk, in a resting pose. This piece shows a uniform dark patina. These objects are examples of the wood carving traditions of the Meiji to early Showa periods.

Condition report:

The boxwood head netsuke is in good overall condition with some natural grain lines and minor surface wear consistent with its age. The dark wood figural netsuke appears to be intact with an even patina; however, blurred imagery in the provided photographs limits a detailed assessment of fine surface details or minor abrasions.
