Lot 519: A 20th Century Indian Inlaid Black Stone Plaque Depicting the Taj Mahal
A rectangular decorative plaque of Indian origin, likely from the Agra region. The piece features a depiction of the Taj Mahal monument, rendered using an inlay technique with pieces of iridescent white shell or mother-of-pearl set into a polished black stone ground, possibly black marble. Fine engraved and inked lines delineate the architectural details of the central dome, flanking minarets, and arched entrances. To the right of the structure are three stylized representations of garden paths or reflecting pools. The plaque is secured to a black-painted backing board by four metal edge clips. The reverse is fitted with a wire hanging mechanism for wall mounting.
Condition report:
The plaque is in generally good condition with minor surface dust and light abrasions consistent with age. The metal edge clips and the hanging wire on the reverse show visible oxidation and surface rust. There is minor wear to the edges of the backing board.
